Kim Petras is the first transgender person to win a Grammy for a song by Sam Smith.

The popular vocalist with German ancestry gained notoriety when she appeared on Sam Smith's electropop hit "Unholy."

Because I'm the first transgender woman to win, Sam kindly asked me to take this award, Petras stated in her winning speech.

In the backstage area of the awards event, Petras gushed even more about her bond with Smith.

Sam has been a particularly close friend and ally of mine, Petras remarked.

Along with Smith, Petras took to the stage to pay tribute to some of her musical idols, such as Madonna.

"Sophie, you are such an inspiration," Petras added. "I adore you, and my music will always be inspired by you."
